Proyecto Montezuma’s Escuelita de Idiomas graduates now run a locally owned and operated Surf School. We offer surf lessons for beginners to advanced. Learn the waves, the area, the surfer slang and more with Montezuma’s local surfers! Lessons are held on Playa Grande, local beach break with great waves for surfers of all levels. Playa Grande is a National Reserve and home to four species of Sea Turtles. Surf great waves in the middle of lush, protected jungle…just imagine how beautiful!

Isla Tortuga

This all-day tour includes everything:
Snorkel Gear, Boat Transport, Lunch: Fish BBQ, Fruit, Beer, Soda, Water

We leave the shores of Montezuma at 9:30 and travel by boat for 45 minutes. We reach the coral reef and snorkel until lunch. Lunch is served on the breathtaking white sand beach loaded with palm trees and gorgeous flora and fauna. Relax after lunch, hike around the island, or snorkel again in the afternoon. We return, during the boat transport, you have the chance to see whales, dolphins and sea turtles. We return to Montezuma at 4:30pm.

This tour takes you through the lush jungle, over 9 cables of adrenaline fun. Stop to swim in the breathtaking falls and then continue on the last two longest cables with views to remember!

Along the Beach Tour, you cross five rivers and six different beaches. Plus, almost the entire tour goes along protected and reserved land, so you see native birds, lots of monkeys, iguanas, and so much more wildlife.

Mountain Tour takes you up along Pura Vida road and to La Florida waterfalls. These large and impressive waterfalls are five-tiered with swimming pools, rope swings and amazing jungle views.

Full Moon tours are offered every month!  Our Full Moon travels along the same path as the Beach Tour, to El Chorro waterfall.

We also offer volunteers and tourists the opportunity to explore the wonderful world under the sea while supporting Proyecto Montezuma´s Escuelita de Ingles. You can earn your international CMAS diving certification by partaking in a  session of classes, pool time and deep sea diving. You will explore secret islands and beaches as you learn from global experts. PLUS, you support scholarships for local children to further their studies at La Escuelita de Ingles. All scuba diving programs take a minimum of 2 weeks to complete and can be combined with any of Proyecto Montezuma’s great programs.

Diving Adventures around Montezuma

Central Pacific Ocean is home to stunning reefs composed of volcanic and coral formation with depths ranging between 8 and 35 meters (25 – 115 feet).  The temperature of the water varies from 26to 29 degrees Celsius (78 – 84 F) with a visibility ranging from 10 to 30 meters (30 – 100 feet) depending on the time of year.

CMAS takes diver training seriously and places the utmost emphasis on three key areas: safety, diver competence and marine conservation.  To insure quality instruction, CMAS programs provide comprehensive training at both the diver and instructor levels.  According to the official website: “CMAS programs are based on a system of teaching and mentoring that when combined produce divers who are superior in knowledge, skills and abilities.  As a result of this comprehensive training, CMAS divers are not only safe and competent in the water, but are also more appreciative of the marine environment.” CMAS’s 1 Star Diving Certification courses are equivalent to PADI’s open water dive certification.

Proyecto Montezuma’s mission is to further the educational opportunities for local children and adults, plus to offer travelers a unique approach to learning Spanish. To achieve this mission, Proyecto Montezuma’s team of dedicated global volunteers offers English classes and much-needed extra-curricular courses to public school kids and area adults at our Escuelita de Idiomas (“little language school”). Plus, we teach Spanish immersion classes to those eager to accomplish the impressive feat of learning a new language. All English classes are free of charge to locals and run by our team of volunteers. Proyecto Montezuma’s Escuelita de Idiomas is funded by tourists booking sustainable and popular tours through our tour office, volunteer program fees and donations. Using a unique accredited curriculum, our students learn conversational English while furthering environmental care and concern. We offer courses day and night, small class sizes with formal and nonformal assessments. Our classes are organized into the following groups: Preschool, Elementary, High School & Adults. We accept volunteers with and without teaching experience. Regardless of your age, experience or expertise, your time spent teaching and learning with local children and adults is guaranteed to be rewarding.

Spanish School
Proyecto Montezuma offers conversational Spanish Immersion courses for volunteers and eager globetrotters. Accomplish your life-long dream of speaking a foreign language, brush up on your conversational skills, grammar and learn local colloquialisms from native speakers. Our teachers are all native Ticos (local term for people from Costa Rica) with prior teaching experience and utilize an accredited curriculum to teach to your learning needs.  Ticos are famous for their fun slang (Pura Vida, Tuanis, Mae and so much more) and our teachers are eager to help you speak with confidence and ease. Our classes mix conversational speaking, grammar instruction and writing exercises to provide you with confidence when speaking in numerous situations. Spanish School’s immersion courses include 2 hours of group or individual instruction, books, learning materials and a guaranteed positive learning experience.

Ocean Paddle Tours:

Snorkel at Cabuya Island, Explore Secret Waterfalls, Watch Incredible Sea Sunsets

Piedra Colorada Tour:
We head to the shores of Playa Montezuma to enter the sea and head north to Piedra Colorada. With your naturalist/bilingual guide, you paddle until you reach the shore of Costa Rica’s first Absolute Reserve and the birthplace of Costa Rica’s impressive  conservation system. We take a break from paddling to explore Piedra Colorada (in English: Colored Rock beach for the sand is covered with rainbow colored rocks. Your guide will take you to a natural “spa” treatment including aquatic massage, secret waterfalls, volcanic rock mudmask. . . true paradise!

Then we return to the sea and continue paddling to Playa Grande. At Playa Grande (the great local surf spot and home to four species of sea turtles) we relax, enjoy some fresh fruit and water, then gear up for the paddle back. Playa Grande is also known as Reserva Romelia. Volunteers work to help protect baby turtle eggs and collect much needed data of the native sea turtles.

Sunset Tour:
We start on the shores of Playa Montezuma and paddle south towards Cabuya Island. We paddle by numerous white sand beaches and beautiful jungle coastline. We see a beautiful view of the sun as it sets over the mountains. Great views and amazing photos.

Cabuya Island

Cabuya Island:
Known for its clear, calm waters, this secret island is one of the best places to snorkel. This tour starts at Cabuya’s shore where you will paddle to and around the island. You will learn about the local fish and wildlife with your local guide. After snorkeling, you will be able to explore the island with an indigenous cemetery and great views.
